Check out a new track called “Distance” from John Statz. It is the lead single for his forthcoming album “Old Fashioned” out on Yer Bird Records January 24. The album was produced by Bo Ramsey and Pieta Brown contributed some vocals to this track. I did some texturey guitar stuff, sang a bit, learned how to use Illustrator and did the art.
We had a blast working on the record. Everyone was super cool and positive and I left feeling like we made the world a better place. I had this song stuck in my head for weeks on end after hearing the demo of it. It might be my favorite JS tune to date:
John and I have been partners in crime since the dark ages… Back in 2009 John and I did a lengthy tour through Canada and the NW US… You can read about a worrisome border-crossing debacle here… I’m hoping to talk him into jumping the pond with me somtime in twenty twelve.
I just threw on John’s last record, “Ghost Towns” for the first time in a while and it keeps getting every time I go back to it. Steve Earle and Neil Young & Crazy Horse were big touchstones for it. and I think we really captured some of the dog-eared charm of those records. I mixed half of the album and had a cowrite (The Wichita Waltz w/ Statz, Brad Hoshaw, Brooks West) included, which is a duet with, Whitney Mann. Check it out on bandcamp here.
